Leave of Absence

TAKE TIME OFF TO FOCUS ON WHAT MATTERS MOST.

OVERVIEW

Nestlé offers leave options for when you need time to care for a family member, care for your own serious health condition, bond with a new child, report for military duty, support a family member reporting to active duty or handle other important matters.

Types of Leave

All leave types must be substantiated and approved.

  • Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA)
    • Intermittent — when you take time off in separate periods of time for your or your qualifying family member’s serious health condition (flare-ups or appointments)
    • Continuous – when you need to take 4 or more consecutive days off due to a serious health condition for yourself or to care for a qualifying family member with a serious health condition
  • Short-Term Disability — when you take time off work for medical reasons, such as a surgery or illness
  • Parental — when a birth or non-birth parent takes time off to take care of a new child
  • Military (USERRA) — when you are called to active duty or trainings under the Armed Forces
  • Personal — when an absence from work is taken for personal reasons not otherwise covered by the FMLA or other protected leave policies and all available Paid Time Off has been utilized
  • Jury — when you are called to jury duty
  • Bereavement — when you take time off to grieve the loss of a family member or someone close to you

Here’s what you need to do, whether you’re initiating a leave or returning from one.

Before Your Leave

Follow these important steps to arrange for your leave:

  • Talk with your manager as soon as you know you’ll need a leave of absence. If your leave is foreseeable, per policy you must provide at least 30 days’ notice. This way, your department can plan for your time away and you can get all the required documentation completed prior to your leave beginning.
  • Discuss your leave options with your manager or your HR representative to help you determine the type of leave that best fits your circumstances and eligibility.
  • Initiate a claim with the Nestlé Leave and Disability Service Center administered by Sedgwick.
  • Submit all paperwork necessary for your leave by the due dates provided.
  • Keep your manger updated! Let us know if anything changes.
  • If your leave dates change, discuss with your manager and call Sedgwick as soon as possible, as additional documentation may be required.

During Your Leave

Refer to these must-knows while you’re out of the office:

  • If you are on an unpaid leave, you will be billed for your benefit premiums. Please make sure to pay your premiums so you don’t experience a lapse in coverage.
  • If your leave is due to your own medical condition and you have been released to return, submit a return-to-work document from your treating physician to your manager and Sedgwick prior to your return.
    • In other cases, confirm your return date with your manager and Sedgwick at least two weeks (if possible) in advance of your return.
  • If you’re unable to return to work as planned, let your manager and Sedgwick know you may need an extension as soon as possible.
    • In most cases, extensions will require medical documentation and must be requested and approved through Sedgwick.
  • Intermittent absences must be reported locally, under all normal call-off processes, in addition to Sedgwick, in order to be reviewed for approval.
